28th March, 2022
A service of thanksgiving will take place on 29th March 2022 to commemorate His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip was connected to an incredible 750 organisations and we were honoured that The Duke was an enthusiastic supporter of the Royal Variety Charity; attending 29 Royal Variety Performances with our Patron Her Majesty The Queen.
He first attended the Royal Variety Performance in 1947, with Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, RN, accompanying HM King George VI, HM Queen Elizabeth, his bride-to-be HRH The Princess Elizabeth and HRH The Princess Margaret Rose.
His Royal Highness attended the Royal Variety Performance for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, being the 100th anniversary year of the show. It marked 64 years since the young, engaged couple first graced the Royal Box together.
Mr Giles Cooper, Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, escorted His Royal Highness and recalls “HRH had the most amazing sense of humour, with an uncanny ability to immediately put you at your ease. What I found amazing was his extraordinary knowledge of show business and how to stage a show. I will certainly miss how he made me laugh”
The Royal Variety Charity will miss the presence, keen eye, and comments of The Duke of Edinburgh at our shows and thank him for all he did for those working in the entertainment industry over so many decades.
